Instructions and Help about Sample civil complaint connecticut

Good evening. I'm Peter Bartnik, a board-certified civil trial attorney practicing law here in Connecticut. Today's topic is a procedural matter. We're just going to talk about what is a complaint in a civil case, for example, a car crash case. A complaint, you may have heard that term, complaint. For me, it's a legal term of art. It's the charging document filed in a civil case. So, this is the document, a piece of paper where the plaintiff says, "This is the way I have been wronged, and I'm entitled to recover under the law. This is how I've been harmed." And yeah, that's what a complaint is. It's a written claim for damages under the law. In a complaint, you're going to see the names of the parties usually. You're going to start with the names and contact information, names and address of the parties, or at least enough information to make it clear that this court has jurisdiction over the case. So, you're going to make sure the parties are, for example, for a Connecticut case, the parties are typically in Connecticut. So, you want to make it clear that the Connecticut court has jurisdiction. So, you're going to have the name of the parties, you're going to have a description of how, what happened in the case, your description of the facts, you're going to have a description of the harm, how have you been damaged. And then there are other things you'll see in the complaint called a request for relief and some of the procedural aspects. But for this video, we're simply talking about generally what is a complaint, and the complaint is the statement in writing why the plaintiff is entitled to recover under the law. I hope that's helpful. Have a good afternoon. Bye-bye.
